Strongly considered by many (including Carl himself) to be his best album to date, Rise was finally released in 2016. It took 5 years in the making as Carl was determined to release something that really stood out. He took on board the advise and critisms from other fellow musicians who listened to and scrutinised the initial recordings. He would then go back and rework on each track time and time again until it felt right. He also sought the professional assistance of local producers Mike Frankland (mixing) and Steve Hoggart (mastering) to really bring the songs to life. The album consists of 12 tracks, the closing track on the album being a re-recording of the track 'Awake', which originally featured as a hidden track on his first album 'The Big Picture'.
Rob Nichols wrote in NARC Magazine "Rise may have been five years in the making but the wait has been well worth it. The jaunty piano intro to album opener 'Blue Heat' opens out into a pulsating big production and signifies that there are surprises in store on a record that hums with melodic beauty", while The Crack Magazine said "Rise sees Carl operating at the very top of his game. He writes the kind of swooning melodies that combine the sunny with the heartfelt, and he’s equally at ease with the piano ballad (Only For You) as he is with getting nice and jaunty (Wake Up Call).
